Chapter 9

It was a slim chance that Jimmy would be there but she had to check. Conor’s stomach grumbled on the way out and he asked her if she wanted to go for lunch.

“No time, Conor, if Jimmy is involved in this in any way, I’m pretty sure Stephanie will be on the phone by now telling him to get off the island or destroy what evidence can pin him to the case.”

“You mean the bike?”

“That or whatever reason he had to kill him.”

“But he hasn’t got a phone,” he said.

“That’s what she said. Everyone has a phone. Besides, you saw it yourself how much high-tech equipment he has in there. He’s a collector. When you see an apartment stacked with all the creature comforts, you can bet your bottom dollar he has a phone.”

They hopped in the SUV and Jane sped out of the apartment block making her way over to the west side of the island.

“You think she could be behind her father’s murder?”

“She wouldn’t be the first one to have plotted to kill a parent. There have been countless children who have been abused and turned on their parents. Unfortunately, it happens. I just hope we can stop them before they kill again.”

“Kill again?”

“People who do this aren’t one-shot murderers. If they get away with it, they think they are untouchable.”

Boulder Wreckers was located in a small section of Old Berkenridge Forest. The town council had allowed it to operate as long as it was built in a location away from the tourist routes and as long as a large fence was built around the place and they didn’t pollute. The council had originally given them a year to operate the business. As long as there were no noise complaints, and no one kicked up a fuss, they would allow them to continue in business.

When the SUV arrived outside, the open sign was up and the gate was open. Jane drove in and parked near a battered trailer that acted as the office of operations. She’d only been down there a few times in the past ten years. It was mostly to find parts for her vehicles as it was cheaper to get them there than to get them direct from the manufacturer; however, she now leased her SUV so having parts breaking down on her wasn’t as common.

As they got out of the vehicle, a guy appeared in the doorway. Wearing a pair of jean overalls and a dirty white T-shirt, he hung on a pole above the door, his feet just slightly off the ground, before he let go and came out. He had slicked-back hair as if he’d used the grease from the cars to hold it back, and a pair of round glasses perched on the end of his nose.

“You know where Jimmy is?”

“Haven’t seen him since yesterday, why, is he in trouble?”

“We’re just trying to locate him.”

Jane tapped Conor, and he looked towards her. She motioned towards a bike that was slightly out of sight.
